I know it's because I just watched a western the other day, but the "wholesomeness" of the era was the first thing to come to mind upon reading the topic title.

Basically, the image they strove for of God-fearing Americans existing in a world where problems were minor inconveniences and all was right with the world by the show's end. Even in a lot of movies aimed at adult audiences, they harped pretty heavily on Americanism and morality.
