I feel like black clover actually got a fair bit right. Stuff people usually dont really bring up. The power scale and ceiling is effectively established and adhered to, some enemies just hard counter the main character and only utilizing teamwork can they succeed, powers interact interestingly.

The main, asta, is handled a bit interestingly in terms of ability. He has a super generic power canceling ability but its only melee in a world of ranged attacks. He actually has higher physical abilities than pretty much anyone in the show BUT thats pretty useless in many scenarios.

The show keeps a very steady pace and goes about exploring the side characters pretty quickly. Some of the side characters just kinda suck though. The writer seems to be fond of giving each of the main characters a super OP power and then counterbalancing it with a pretty big weakness.

The fact that even starting out the main characters have some attributes that are higher than their opponents while still being the underdogs stood out to me and it was nice to have a lot of the fights be about finding a way to cover for your weaknesses. I really liked how the big fight around episode 50 played out. It was definitely an above average shonen fight.

Of course, it's still a shonen. People have no subtlety and must exclaim their emotions constantly. The villains motivation is paper thin, or rather, doesn't match the methods. The two main enemy factions established so far have motivation for taking action, but not for taking the actions they take, and they end up just coming across as cartoonishly evil instead of interesting. Real wasted potential. The main villain reminds me a lot of Yggdrasil from tales of symphonia, but that game handled that type of character much better IMO.

Banter is repetitive and some peoples behaviors don't really stay changed after characters briefly develop. Especially annoying with the main girl who keeps making progress only to seemingly forget that any of it ever happened. Other side characters turn over a new leaf TOO fast and go from snobish dickheads to super caring people in an instant.

The power system is also a little underutilized. With how strong each of type of magic is, it becomes very apparent that combining 2-3 peoples powers is just actually unstoppable but they rarely do this.

Asta's character initially seems like a clone of naruto with better coping skills but thats actually the problem. He already coped with his problems before the show even starts. He doesn't really have anywhere to grow. He can shrug off insults, always works hard, cares about his companions, and generally doesn't act out. His only flaw is that he is dumb but thats not really something you overcome. Compare that to naruto who also struggles to cope with being an outcast but does act out and becomes standoffish. He has a lot more room to grow and improve over the course of the series.

I guess just because of how hard it got shit on, I was pleasantly surprised. Good chance I never watch anymore of it though. I feel like its about on par with naruto which I put above bleach and way above fairy tail but below one piece and way below hunter x hunter.
