I feel like the topic title is trying to be sneaky, "got separated into 3 different states" can mean A) you now have +2 states or B) California has been split into three, and those three were absorbed by other neighbouring states (so -1 state).

I THINK America has 51 states? That number sounds familiar... So I'm guessing 53. Since that's 51+2.
But then the poll wouldn't have the "51+3" trick answer, so....?

50. We've toyed with the idea of making a 51st state in the past but have never done it. Can't blame the people for wanting to remain a territory as I understand they are exempt from taxes because of it.
