It basically starts with the treaty of versailles and moves forward from there. The first quarter or so of the book is just the setting of the stage and the actual rise to the chancellorship. It sheds a lot of light on the politics of the time, and gets very detailed into the backgrounds of the major players. It gives great insight into the resistance movement within in Germany, both civilian and military.
