I must admit, despite my very good knowledge of Germany through the last 140 or 150 years, I had never heard or read of this. I'm actually really surprised that people were willing to come in and help rebuild Germany, even if they were paid. Was this a larger part of the Marshall Plan? But yeah, Germany was in large part rubble after 1945, and it took quite a while to rebuild things. Do you know what one of my favourite words is? Trummerfilm.

You know, East Germany really wasn't that much better than ruined Germany in the last 40s. I mean, they had infrastructure and jobs, but...it was a pretty bad place to live. Did you get a chance to read this East German jokes I was talking about? They were great.
