The entire thing is just a bunch of students at an Ivy League culture club. They probably got him because he was Asian and offering to do it for cheap. Probably couldn't afford Aziz Ansari or Awkwafina for something different lol.

The article by the friend and suitemate of the organizers doesn't hold much weight. It's just another student's opinion. A friend at that. It also sounds like the board, which is again a bunch of other students, didn't like the joke and already started moving towards getting him out.

He performs at the Comedy Celler just a few miles south by NYU which is usually crawling with NYU students, as well as clubs around the city, so he figured the reaction wouldn't be that massively different. I'm sure he's used the same bits there. Nothing about a culture event means he has to change things. I've been to tons of these types of events in and around the city, and the point of the comedian parts is that they're gonna give a regular stand up act, like you'd find in the comedy clubs in Times Square or downtown.

He didn't know how to counter the reactions and tried to use the "well shit wasn't like this when I was in college just 10-14 years ago" and he's 100% right. It wasn't. You wouldn't have to change bits around back then. All this does is give a case for other comedians to further avoid colleges. Being realistic, some of the big names already know this. This guy as a relative newbie, didn't.
