I've actually failed a few, though that's mostly because I'm very rusty (prior to yesterday, I think it's been over 3 years since I played any Smash at all) and tend to be using somebody I'm less familiar with because I just did Classic with them. Cloud in particular took a few tries because I just had no idea how to handle him (I never got any of the Smash 4 DLC). They've added a hidden menu option to face challengers again if you fail, though (it appears after a couple matches/Classic runs), and let you select your character there. It's a nice little addition, since it means you can keep unlocking other ones even if you'r stuck on one. Yeah. Same here. I think I failed to three. But I got one of them during the first rematch.
