Semantics. Matter can be destroyed to create energy.

It's not semantics, the words literally mean different things.

Energy can be transformed into matter, and matter can be transformed into energy, but the equation remains balanced and the overall amount remains stable in a closed system.

Destruction implies that the thing in question completely ceases to exist, which is not the case. Creation implies that the thing in question appears out of nothingness, which is not the case.

Either creation or destruction would alter the amount of matter/energy present in a given system, whereas transformation maintains a steady amount.

As far as we know, literally all of the matter and energy that exists in the universe has existed since the beginning of time, and literally nothing new has come into being or ceased to be past the initial moment. What's here now has always been here, merely in different forms.
