Step dad is a marvel comic nerd (owns like a thousand marvel comics) and he says gotg was very obscure and ant Man and iron Man and ant Man where b listers in terms of popularity.

It kind of was. Back when Marvel was facing bankruptcy, they sold the movie rights to their characters to avoid bankruptcy. Spider-Man was sold to Sony and Fantastic Four and X-Men were sold to Fox. Nobody wanted the Avengers though because they weren't considered as popular. Heck, New Line Cinema bought the Blade movie rights. Get that. The Blade movie rights were sold, but the Avengers were not sold. Heck, Daredevil and Ghost Rider were sold too, but not the Avengers.
To add Spiderman and xmen had successful cartoons iirc. They made an avengers cartoon but iirc it lasted one season ---
