When I grew up in Sweden, the N-word simply meant a darkskinned person who originates or have ancestors that originates from Africa.
And with N-word, I mean the lighter version, the one that Martin Luther King, Jr. used in his "I Have a Dream" speech of 1963. The worse version was never used until gangster rap became popular.
And yes, we knew about slavery and the Civil Right Movements, but the way we saw it was that you had poisoned your version of the word. Since we never used the word in a negative way, we had no problems with using it. Black immigrants had no problems with the word, so why would we?
If we wanted to use an offensive term, then we simply used blatte, which can be compared to kanake.

I didn't know they had gangster rap in the southern US in the 1800s! I guess you learn something new every day!!!!
