It's like being told that half of your heart is necrotic and needs to be removed, but the Doctor just walks away and leaves you to do it yourself in an empty room with no tools. So over the course of weeks, months or years you slowly reach inside and pull out the dead tissue. You burn it and the ashes float away with the wind, carrying with it all of the moments and feelings you experienced together, all the shared references and in-jokes and everything else. The remaining parts of your heart scar over and you eventually start to feel good again, but it's never going to be filled again as much as it was when it was whole because it's not anymore.
