I'm still working on shading the back. I normally outline my figures but yeah, it looks better if you vary the line weight and have soft edges rather than hard edges like this. I especially do it because my scanner often doesn't capture it well if the line isn't well defined. Earlier today, I drew a mouth on another drawing very light and it was showing up weird in the scan, so I had to darken the outline of the mouth a lot more.
