It basically does what all comedy series want to do by having a solid cast of characters and a good emotional core behind it. Its really difficult to be funny all the time, so ideally, the cast and writing should be good enough that the show is enjoyable to watch even when youre not watching. Hinamatsuri definitely achieves that and manages to have a lot of nice heartwarming moments too. It basically works in whatever mode its in. The animation and presentation being awesome doesnt hurt things, of course. Every episode is basically full of entertainment in varying ways. And of course, the cast is top tier. Hina is the best, Hitomi is full of great comedy, and Anzu provides some nice emotional moments (though I didnt enjoy her scenes as much as the other two). Nittas awesome too. Manages to be just as silly as the aliens, most of the time. And the other supporting cast members are generally excellent as well.
