The truth is that polls are flawed and only go after old people who aren't working or at school and people dumb enough to answer random numbers who call then during the day. That is partially why the polls skew old and conservative. But it's also true that hardline Dems who participate in primaries are the older and more conservative ones, young people are more likely to be more left wing, more likely to register independent, and less likely to be knowledgeable about the voting process or just have less permanent living situations than older people.
