She freed them and gave them a choice. The story plays with the "white savior" tropes by (briefly) exploring the power vacuums left behind, the total lack of respect or understanding between different cultures, the plight of the new class of freedmen, and comparing forced slavery to fuedal servitude under a monarch...but that only works if they are not actually enslaved.
