Sure they are. They can be put there for years at a time. That's one of the most controversial aspects to solitary confinement that prison rights advocates are trying to change.

But moreover, the fact that solitary confinement is involuntary is part of why it's so mentally unhealthy. There's a big difference between voluntary seclusion and involuntary isolation. They've done experiments on a lot of torture methods (including the famous "Chinese Water Torture") and a lot of them only work if the person is constrained or otherwise restricted against their will. If you just have someone sit in a comfy chair and drip water on them, it's annoying but not much more.

This would be the same thing. Monks and other ascetic religious adherents have done things like this dating back centuries without it damaging their minds.

This wasn't explicitly ruled out in the OP and it's against the spirit of what was being asked (basically you're supposed to be comfy, but isolated and with no external entertainment), so I'm assuming one is present.
