I've seen major papers, that had received many hours of work, from people getting good grades, that were far less coherent than the average post in this topic. I had cousins from Texas who were completely unable to write in jr high and high school despite good grades. I was shocked to see how bad they were. That was 10-15 years ago. So it's not so much new as happening in more areas. Heck at the Georgia college my wife works at the kids struggle to write 5 page papers.
