Shopping for food. But even during a 10 minute drive, you car could break down. You could walk, but during certain weather, it could definitely be safer to call for help. Even if not for you, for others. By that, if it was raining or the roads were covered in ice, someone car could slip and hit you. So, not even your own fault. Having a cell phone would allow you to call for help. And then you could safely wait in your car for help. Whether its a tow to a car shop or just back home.

How far are we willing to stretch this? What's next, an earthquake on the east coast or a meteor strike? I mean these situations are so unlikely. By your guys logic I could be standing in my front yard and get bit by a snake unless I have one of those $100 a month magic boxes that prevent all bad situations. Reminds me of that Simps ep where Homer buys the rock that keeps bears away.

A car breaking down isnt an unlikely situation. Happens to lots of people. Youre the one trying to act like a cell phone is useless to everyone. First of all, everyones situation isnt the same. Just because you live 10 minutes away from work doesnt mean everybody else does. Also, youre the one pretending that everything is always perfect. Cars break down. Weather happens. Emergencies occur. A cell phone helps when those problems arise. Just because you dont always need one doesnt mean its not convenient or helpful.
