The Hollywood Reporter brings word that The Lonely Islands Akiva Schaffer has been hired to direct Disneys live-action/CG hybrid feature film version of Chip n Dale: Rescue Rangers. David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman (The Muppets, Beauty and the Beast) will produce. It Disneys feature film reimagining of Chip n Dale: Rescue Rangers has found its director. Its still unknown if the film will go to theaters or if it will be an exclusive for Disney+, which launches later this year. The animated series, which began in 1989, reinvented the Chip and Dale characters (themselves created in 1943) as a couple of private detectives who, with their team of pint-sized sleuths, solve cases for animal clients. It ran for three seasons before getting picked up in syndication and on the Disney Channel for the next decade. The film will not be an origin story or a detective agency story, but all other details are being kept under wraps. All that is known is that it will be meta, self-referential and cool. The script was written by Dan Gregor and Doug Mand.
