Of all the "mainstream" directors who carried this spirit, Sidney Lumet was probably the most emblematic. Dog Day Afternoon is one of those really edgy, even by today's standards, anti-establishment movies. I mean, you find yourself rooting for a guy who's robbing a bank to ~~pay for his lover's sex change operation~~. That's pretty heavy shit for 1975.
