Well, I think it would be a very weak and un-compelling romance if there were zero changes made to the story. And my issue is not that there's a harem strictly speaking, but more that romance appears to be a significant part of the story while the harem aspect makes all of the candidate romances individually feel underdeveloped.

If there were many romance options as is currently the case, but all of them were well developed and fully realized romances as in a visual novel or something, then I'd be okay with that. (Practically this would be very hard, but I'm talking in hypotheticals here)

Cutting the romance aspect entirely would also address my concern, so I agree on that.
