There's not enough of that recently outside of isekai, and anime is probably the best visual medium for it. I don't get why it just has to be some guy who gets transported into a videogame or dies to be the protagonist when it often has no effect on the story. Twelve Kingdoms did just hit Crunchy, and it's one of the greatest fantasy anime ever made. I guess it's TECHNICALLY Isekai, but more in the Escaflowne sense.
