If people even so much as start looking for a potential intruder (like a whole camp not just one dude I think) then it screws the whole thing up iirc. Basically you either need to know where the guy you are looking for is and just go there or be perfect stealth. Nothing beyond the guard thinks he sees me and comes to investigate.
