Pet Hit and Run Laws Its illegal to flee the scene if you hit a pet while youre operating a vehicle. If you hit a pet, you must stop your car and remain at the scene. You must either make contact with the pets owner and exchange information or call the police. Its a misdemeanor to commit a hit and run involving a dog or other pet.
Only a misdemeanor but still illegal. The least you could do is take the pet to a vet to see if it is chipped.
This is also part of the reason all my cats are indoor cats.
What if it's a street cat and not a pet
Not sure how you would make that determination without stopping first and even once you have stopped then you may as well take it to the vet either way and they would check for chip.
