Pet Hit and Run Laws
Its illegal to flee the scene if you hit a pet while youre operating a vehicle. If you hit a pet, you must stop your car and remain at the scene. You must either make contact with the pets owner and exchange information or call the police. Its a misdemeanor to commit a hit and run involving a dog or other pet.

Only a misdemeanor but still illegal. The least you could do is take the pet to a vet to see if it is chipped.

This is also part of the reason all my cats are indoor cats.

What if it's a street cat and not a pet

Not sure how you would make that determination without stopping first and even once you have stopped then you may as well take it to the vet either way and they would check for chip.

This happened not all that long ago. I'm not from Quebec but I am canadian so it was all over the news for a bit

MONTREAL -- A widow whose husband and daughter died when their motorcycle crashed into a woman's car as she helped ducks on a highway is satisfied with the 90-day jail term the accused received Thursday.

Besides serving the time on weekends, Emma Czornobaj must do 240 hours of community service and is prohibited from driving for 10 years.

After Czornobaj stopped her car in June 2010 to rescue ducklings on the side of the highway, the motorcycle carrying Andre Roy and his teenager daughter Jessie slammed into her vehicle.

Old lady with good intentions stops on highway to not run over the ducks. Kills 2 humans. Not worth it, lots of people here were advocating manslaughter charges as it was worse than a reactionary swerve she downright stopped on one of our countries biggest multi lane highway.
