It's got really good character writing and creates a compelling romance without making it HIGH DRAMA. I don't necessarily mind high drama (I've saved Clannad and Toradora throughout the contest), but this seems like the main reason to recommend it to non-yuri fans. It's a show about characters with relatable problems and how their relationships with each other allow them to deal with those problems. I also think it's pretty good from a cinematography/directing standpoint, though it's not exactly the type of show where that is a huge deal. --- Oh woops.
