Melancholia is definitely the most depressing film I've ever seen.

There's another film from the same year called Another Earth that works as a great companion piece to it. But that might be too much depression to go through back-to-back.

I've only seen one Lars von Trier film, Dogville, and that was crushingly bleak. I hear almost all of his films are like that.

I think they range from bleak (Breaking the Waves) to emotional snuff films (Antichrist)

Truth be told, the only other LVT film that I've seen in full is Nymphomaniac, which was not good.
