She describes it purely as being based on their level of interest. i.e. if you're still thinking and/or striving to win, you're alive otherwise you're dead nothing to do with actually being killed or hurt or anything like that it's an interesting link with motivational quotes like, uh, "some people die without ever having lived" or w/e, y'know? like, being alive witout being alive. i.e. a metaphor for depression, almost. when meta-characters "die", it's because they've given up. then they come back when they regain their spirit. interesting stuff. ...
