I learned hiragana and katakana through a separate game. They're not hard to learn at all, except I keep getting confused with some characters ( vs , vs , probably others).

I picked up Kanji Combat because it was recommended by my friend, and it's been very helpful so far. It's nice to think about kanji as picture words, and sometimes you learn a character and you can put it to use based on something you've seen before (like is or nihongo, which is how to spell the language's name. Or is or gakkou, which is the word for school.)
