#49. The Social Network

Dir: David Fincher
Genre: Drama
Year: 2010

There were several works in the early part of the decade that have both set the stage for the rest of the 2010s and also served as paragons for this time period. For me, it was My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy for music, True Detective season 1 for television, and The Social Network for movies. Years from now, we may be calling The Social Network the movie of our generation--not necessarily because it's the best one, but because it really captures the spirit of what it was like to be in our late teens/early 20s living in this time.

I had several unrelated people come up to me and tell me that the Mark Zuckerberg character in this movie reminded them of me. I still can't tell if that's more of an insult or a compliment. But either way, I love how he is written and performed. By making Zuckerberg kind of a smartass, socially awkward genius, it takes what should be a bland story and really elevates it to something special. This is peak Sorkin writing and peak Fincher directing, which creates the perfect combination to reveal the true zeitgeist of the era.
