It makes sense. Gradual change is always the way to go for long term improvement.

Demanding drastic change feels good in the moment for members of whatever group you're talking about, but it allows for equally strong pushback which hurts progress on the long term.

Almost ever single civil rights movement that was ever successful was forced on the population from the federal government. Though I do agree that gradual change is my preferred way, history says otherwise.

With that said, I think a lot of the animosity has to do with the current Transgender movement and how invasive it's starting to become whether its about bathrooms or inequality for woman in sports. For gay marriage, it was predominately just about marriage and things like adoption which didn't affect many people's lives directly, it was a more live and let live. For the transgender movement, it was about everything else and how everyone had to change their vocabulary to opening the door about other +200 "genders". Hell, there is a reason why a lot of my friends who are part of the LGB community reject the T part in it, they feel it's a totally different battle that has nothing to do with them.
