#43. Aladdin

Dir: Ron Clements and John Musker
Genre: Animated, Musical, Fantasy
Year: 1992

Aladdin is my favorite (and the best) film of the Disney Renaissance. Arriving at this decision wasn't easy, but I sort of broke down each element to figure out what my #1 would be, and it mostly came down to this vs The Lion King:

-Best songs: Aladdin #1, The Lion King #2
-Best animation: The Lion King #1, Aladdin #2
-Best story: The Lion King #1, Aladdin #2
-Best voice acting: Aladdin #1, The Lion King #2
-Best characters: Aladdin #1, The Lion King #2

So what it really boiled down to were the characters. And Robin Williams as the genie in particular makes this movie stand out from the rest of the pack. A perfect performance--easily the best celebrity VO artistry of the era--packed with an emotional gut punch. Aladdin is one of the few movies that can make me tear up at the end, where Aladdin sacrifices everything to keep his word to the genie. We all had very lucky childhoods for having this in our lives.
