#42. Raiders of the Lost Ark

Dir: Steven Spielberg
Genre: Adventure
Year: 1981

They just don't make movies like this anymore. Can you imagine a wholly original I.P. wherein the audience is treated to a fun, epic adventure with minimal political overtones and a completely new hero that everyone will know by name for the rest of their lives? Yeah, the 80s were a good time for movies.

I love all three Indiana Jones movies (there are only three), but Raiders is clearly the best one. Spielberg and Lucas essentially take the pulpy adventure serials of their childhoods and elevate it for a new era without trying to go for any "bigger" messages or other pompous grandiosity. Their focus is entertainment and good vs evil. For my money, this is the apex of this era of filmmaking, topped only by one other Spielberg passion project that we'll get to soon!
