#41. Back to the Future

Dir: Robert Zemeckis
Genre: Science Fiction
Year: 1985

Back to the Future has somehow become underrated over time despite being one of the most profitable movies ever made. Everything about this film is flawless. It contains a basic but interesting premise, unique characters, one of my favorite scores in history, and genuine fun adventure.

Back to the Future also has an uncanny knack for building tension better than virtually every movie on this list, even though it's not inherently a thriller! Think for a minute about two scenes. The "Earth Angel" scene where Marty must ensure that his parents kiss in order to avoid literally disappearing from existence. It's heart-racing shit to have him literally dissolving as if there is a countdown clock ahead to the end. And, not to be topped, the climactic scene going back to the future also contains one of the most well-executed will-they-make-it events in film history. The movie is just so chock-full of these huge moments like these that it creates such an exciting, wondrous experience few others can dare to match.
