Dir: Jamie Uys
Genre: Comedy
Year: 1980

SephG Superlative: The greatest African movie ever made

The first five minutes of The Gods Must Be Crazy is the best satire of society since Jonathan fucking Swift. I'm not exaggerating. I'm sure it's on YouTube, so do yourself a favor and watch it. It's filmed as a nature documentary, except the focus is on humans in a modern city--effortlessly pointing out the absurdity that is our daily routine with such tongue-and-cheek terse brilliance that it hurts my brain every time.

The rest of The Gods Must Be Crazy is fantastic as well, of course, even as it takes on a more standard narrative. Following the adventure of Xi, a traditional Bush person who sets out to throw the evil Coca-Cola bottle off the edge of the earth, we see various intersecting stories that lampoon civilization, politics, war, love, and consumerism. The characters are completely charming and lovable and it's one of the few movies where you're really truly rooting for the protagonists the entire time.

I rarely see this film discussed in any context, so please take my word on this. The Gods Must Be Crazy is one of the 5 or so best comedies ever made and a true classic in every sense of the word.
