Ringu's barebones style makes some parts (like THE scene) scarier because it feels more real, not being dressed up with effects (similar thing can be said about the soundtrack). However in the in-between moments, the watery, decaying look, visual motifs and Hans Zimmer's chilling, yet melancholy score do a huge part in carrying the film. It feels much more polished, both in style and substance, as more care has gone into connecting plot details.
