Do you think this greedy school should accept the generous offer to pay off the 22K debt for the poor parents? - Results (12 votes)
Yes. If someone is willing to pay with their own money to pay off the debt, then let them. What do they have to lose?

No. I agree with the school. No bailouts for people that should be able to afford their own debts. Keep the threats up!

Todd Carmichael, a Pennsylvania CEO said Wyoming Valley West School District REJECTED his offer to pay off the debt from parents who owed $22,000 in oustanding lunch bills because they don't accept BAILOUTS for parents that SHOULD be able to afford lunches for their kids!!

This comes after the school sent threatening letters to parents that their kids will be sent to FOSTER CARE if they don't pay up!

The CEO of La Colombe Coffee said he offered to wipe out the bills that has caused controversy but school president, Joseph Mazur rejected it during a phone call and said these parents can "afford" to pay these debts as his spokesperson said "The position of Mr. Carmichael is, irrespective of affluence, irrespective of need, he just wants to wipe away this debt" and noted the offer still stands

Wyoming Valley West solicitor, Charles Coslett said he didn't know what the school plans to do but adds that the threat of taking their kids away was REASONABLE and to let them know that they meant business despite the public outcry of the letters. He said "It got their attention didn't it?"

Carmichael said his offer to relieve the debt was in part because he got FREE MEALS as a child growing up near Spokane, Washingot and said "I know what it means to be hungry. I know what it means to feel shame for not being able to afford food"

More than 1000 parents received these debt letters and threats and said they will threaten to send their kids to foster care for neglecting their kids right to food

4 parents owe at least $450 a piece

Child welfare authorities shot back and said it does not run the system this way and warns the school to not send these letters again for false claims

The Times-Tribune calls on lawmakers and state of Dept of Education to outlaw such outlandish conduct by law and regulation covering lunch debt collection

The school also considered serving only peanut butter and jelly sandwiches with poor students but they were advised against it

Joseph Mazur however is standing firm by his decision not to accept the accounts paid off because he wants the parents that SHOULD have the funds to pay off their kids debt and not to bail out people who should pay for it themselves. They will now explore OTHER ways of getting these 1000s of parents to pay up.

Do you think this greedy school should accept this offer by the millionaire?
