Topic	TOMPIC 8: I used Dream Eater in times gone by
Tom Bombadil 07/23/19 11:15:56 PM #320:	STEAM BATTLE #14: 99 Spirits: Returning from the previous battle, and actually starting to grow on me a bit. Chapter 2 is cleared, which gives me some sort of summoning system that I don't particularly understand, but hey more game mechanics! I do quite like the art style. THE VERDICT: 99 Spirits is growing on me, and Endless Legend...kinda underperformed. I think Endless still makes it to round 2, but this was a lot closer than I expected, and 99 Spirits might actually win a match someday! STEAM BATTLE #6- Disgaea 2: Heh, this came up about the same time as it did in the manga topic! I didn't get super far in 2- the gameplay was a step up from 1 but I didn't connect as well with the characters. Plus, NI games have yet to really grab me on Steam, so even though I love me some Disgaea, this is a long ways from a shoe-in. ....But it's pretty fun! The battle sprites are kinda unfortunate, but I think Rozalin is more to my taste than she was back in the day, and...it's Disgaea, man. This port apparently has a thing where you can recruit characters from other games! I got Pleinair, Future Hanako, and some Almaz guy. Based on the cutscene, there aren't any other D1 or D4 characters I know, but I saw Marona and Ash from Phantom Brave. Should be a good time! STEAM BATTLE #11- Breath of Death VII: I must've played this on a friend's console or something back in the day- I remember getting pretty far, but not beating it. It has some interesting ideas- branching levelups, set numbers of (automatic) fights per map, full HP and partial MP restoration every fight, and a combo system. The undead setting ain't my thang, but IIRC it feels more like a classic RPG that just happens to have a lot of skeletons and such. This is just how I remember it- a fun, quick RPG with interesting mechanics. The humor wasn't as clever as I remembered, but it was still mildly amusing. Got to the second town. THE VERDICT: ...Kinda a tossup here. They both play fun and run okay, and I know roughly what I'm getting in both cases and wish to proceed. I can't even really rely on nostalgia either, because Disgaea in general has more goodwill but 2 left a kinda mediocre taste in my mouth. ...Eh I think I'm more in a Disgaea mood, so gut says that's the answer. And that's the first round in the books! No upsets this time around, which if you're playing the home game gives us a bracket of: 1 CT v. 8 VA-11 4 Touhou v. 5 Fire Pro 2 FFX v. 7 Aviary 3 Endless v. 6 Disgaea 2 ...I suspect Touhou will beat Fire Pro, but the other three matches I dunno.
