For me it wasn't just the super lame shortened version of Be Prepared that bothered me, it was that Chiwetel Ejiofor was just so much less menacing and imposing than Jeremy Irons throughout the whole movie. I get that they were trying to add a little nuance to the character but he still does some pretty cartoonishly evil things, so.

Between this and the milquetoast Jafar in Aladdin it seems like they are having trouble with their villains for some reason. Hopefully Ursula at least is done justice.

The problem is that classic Disney villains in general and those 3 you mentioned most of all were extremely queer-coded in the original animations. For good or ill they seem intent on sucking that out of them in the live-action versions, and while I understand that queerness = evil is generally a bad trope that should be avoided, it's pretty much the only LGBTQ representation in these movies (Timon is really it from what's left) and these characters, *especially* Ursula, are pretty beloved in the community. In the end I think it does add something important to these characters and these movies, and by taking it out and not replacing it with anything else (other interesting character traits for the villains, or positive representation), they are lesser for it.
