Never has a single game come so out of left field for me. I'd never played a RE game. I'd never enjoyed a horror game. Was never big on third-person shooters, especially ones with clunky controls. But every publication on the planet was giving this game close to a perfect score. I had to find out why, and oh my god am I glad I did.

Getting a ton of headshots feels great. Body-to-body suplex fools feels great. Getting your head slowly removed from your body by a chainsaw-weilding madman feels great. Standing on the dock and shooting the lake feels great. Your right hand coming off feels great. This game is just great. Hard to believe it came out at the very beginning of 2005; it was easily a few years ahead of its time.

Edge called RE4 "unapologetically a video game", and I love that description. There's a kart ride and frogger-style "dodge the swinging axes" segment, a shooting gallery, a Napoleon wannabe and then, later, an arcade claw game. Once you get out of the village (which is itself one of gaming's creepy, most atmospheric areas) this game goes completely, wonderfully nuts. It also has outstanding attention to detail and a ton of nest little touches to keep you coming back. And an absolute slew of A+ bonus content - all from before the days of DLC - including the Mercenaries, surely the high watermark for mini-games. Also the Krauser fight. Both of them.

I've bought RE4 4 times now, and I'll likely buy it a 5th time one day as well. It's a cut above.
