All he wanted to do was put Phoenix to the test in order to, as he put it, "find out what kind of man" he was. He wanted to see if Phoenix could beat him one-on-one at the end. That's what makes him a great opponent. His entire goal is to push Phoenix to the limit. And 6-5's ending isn't one of its strong points.
