#179:

When we last left our heroes, they had taken refuge in the household of the leader of the Forest Foxes. Selphie asks why Seifer showed up, and Rinoa says she thinks he came to help the Forest Owls because she talked about it a lot with him. During this entire section, Zell just sulks in the corner, understandably beating himself up over his stupid mistake. Quistis explains that Seifer was furious when he found out that all they sent to help in Timber were three rookie SeeD members, so that's why he busted out.

Quistis wonders what will happen to Seifer, and Squall says he may already be dead. Rinoa says she feels sorry for him, which actually causes Squall to laugh because he knows Seifer would hate to hear someone say that about him. He actually understands Seifer pretty well...! Rinoa says she hopes he's still alive, and Squall inwardly tells her to think whatever she wants. Then we get our first real insight into Squall's personal philosophy that makes him who he is, when he thinks, "Reality isn't so kind. Everything doesn't work out the way you want it to. That's why..." and then he actually says the rest aloud to Rinoa, "As long as you don't get your hopes up, you can take anything...You feel less pain." That's what Squall's been telling himself since he was a little kid. As long as he stops hoping Ellone will eventually come back, it will hurt less when she ultimately doesn't. This isn't the way he wanted his life to be, but he has no control over it. He isn't the master of his fate. Rinoa maturely calls him a meany in all caps and a few exclamation marks, causing Squall to (rightfully) wonder what is up with her and then reluctantly (albeit likely insincerely) apologize.

At this point, we're told that the Galbadian soldiers are starting to give up their search, so this is the time to try to skip town. Quistis asks Squall what their next step is after leaving Timber and she cites Garden Code, Article 8, Line 7, which he's able to recall perfectly. Basically, if they can't return to Balamb Garden, they should go to the nearest other one, which is Galbadia Garden in this case.

When we go outside, we encounter a Galbadian soldier...only to discover it's Watts in disguise. He lets us know that there's one more train out of town headed to the place we want to go. Then we run into Zone, also in disguise, telling us that he conveniently got the last tickets for the last train. He also conveniently has enough for everyone but one, and he gives his ticket to Quistis and elects to stay behind with Watts.

Once they're on the train, Squall tries to give an encouraging word to everyone, but Selphie's cries for the door to be opened so she can go into the private part of the train will not be ignored. Squall understands that it's better just to let her have her way. Quistis says she has to express her gratitude to Zone for helping her get out of Timber, and Rinoa chimes in that he likes naughty magazines. Not sure why you decide to disclose that sort of information, but okay! I guess that's meant to be a hint that the Girl Next Door should be saved for the next time you see him.
