Tetris Effect easily winning GotY with no pushback was....very telling of their tastes. Abby pushed back, calling it toothless and there is something to that. It was the game that everybody could agree on. When people did the average of all the staff lists it still came out on top, and the overall list was nearly identical. It is an excellent game without many blatant issues or opponents so it's fine - PUBG is the only GOTY winner that sticks out as just bizarre. However, when you look at their GOTY winners from 2008 to 2014 there is a clear shift. Every one of those was a very common pick among outlets and the more traditional "prestige" single player experiences that often win GOTY awards. Then with Mario Maker they shifted to games that were uncommon picks, much less of those traditional styles of game, but meant more to the site. Tetris Effect is probably their most typical pick of the last four years, yet still a very "Giant Bomb" winner.
