2. Bartz Klauser

There are two Bartz Klausers -- the Bartzes Klauser, if you will. There is the Bartz Klauser who appears in sprite form in the actual video game called Final Fantasy V, and there is the Yoshitaka Amano Bartz Klauser who looks like someone ordered a Skinny Chai Unsweet Firion Latte. I vastly prefer the former Bartz Klauser, whose poppy and pulpy array of catchy one-liners (as illustrated in the superb Final Fantasy V Advance) far outweigh the moody buffoonery seen elsewhere.

The superior Bartz Klauser is a fun-loving, fancy-free adventurer who, along with his valiant chocobo Boko, stumbles into an epic journey courtesy of a meteor falling roughly twenty yards ahead of him. Bartz is friendly, Bartz is funny, and Bartz fits his element (wind) to a tee. He goes where he goes! He's not even on the right planet until further into the story, but who cares? Not Bartz. (Admittedly, he doesn't actually know he's from another planet, but I digress.) He reminds me of myself in some ways, which is impressive for a game as early into the series as his. Also, he says "That overgrown lobster got SERVED!" You can't not like a guy who says that after a boss fight. You just can't.

What holds Bartz back? Well, I've talked about how he's kind of cool but I can't tell you about much else. Because there isn't much else to Bartz Klauser. He's a dashing heroic shrugmuffin. He's a shrugmuffin. A decent one but a baked good nonetheless.
