I'm lukewarm on some parts of Undertale. The character writing and humor is mostly great, but when it misses it can feel like a bit of a slog. The Mettaton arc especially is really long and not that interesting. When I played the game for the first time and was mostly done with it, I was actually wondering what the big deal was.

Here's the thing - the highs of Undertale are VERY high. It has two final bosses that are maybe the best ever, and phenomenal endings, which counts for a lot. It's also a story that gets better and better the more you uncover. I didn't put a lot of thought into my decisions the first time I played and boy oh boy did I feel like an asshole at the end. Undertale does player choice better than any other game in existence, simply because of how much the world can change based on what you do. The contrast between Pacifist and Genocide is wild, and the insight the game gives you on player choice in games and what it means is something I still think about to this day. By the time I'd finished my Pacifist route, I genuinely cared for all the characters and wanted to give them the best ending possible, which isn't something that most games can say. I couldn't even bring myself to do the Genocide route...so I watched it on youtube...and felt like an asshole afterwards anyway, thanks Undertale.

It's a shame that so much of the game has been spoiled through cultural osmosis, because some of the surprises it throws at you are crazy if you don't see them coming. Undertale is a very personal experience that definitely isn't for everyone, but if you 'get it', you really, really get it.
