We shouldn't toss that by the wayside in our blind belief of one side of a story. They don't sell your debt because you missed one payment and you didn't realize it. They sell your debt when you miss multitudes of payments, and they cannot get you to pay the amount because they either can't get a hold of you or because you are uncooperative.
