PT was worth it because, since Lucas was involved, it was still the same genre.

The issue with the new films is that they don't actually know what Star Wars is, so they don't really mesh well. Rian Johnson's vision could have been executed well, but literally was impossible after TFA set different tracks. TFA didnt know how to be Star Wars so it banked on copying what had come before to account for the fact that it was trying not to be the PT, which meant it was trying not to be Star Wars.

Prequel trilogy had bad writing and acting at points, but the movies were still Star Wars. Lucas isn't a great movie maker but he understands his creation at least.
