You can put the negative line on the dead battery, but there's a real risk of causing the battery to explode and/or catching the vehicle on fire. I don't know how dangerous it is, but it's catastrophic enough to not be worth the risk at all since it's easy to avoid. Bits of plastic and battery acid flying at you and your friends sounds like a fun time, but it's not.


This is what I thought.

My cousin was boosting me and went to put it on the battery and i was like "whoa whoa you are supposed to put it on the engine block here's 5 sources on my phone that say so" and he got extremely defensive, "oh well i've never done it that way and i've done this a bunch of times" "i sure hope this isn't gonna blow both of our cars out." etc

He's a "handy" type of a guy who is supposedly knowledgeable about cars and construction and stuff whereas I'm pretty well known for being pretty helpless at this kind of thing, so I caved in and backed the fuck up but I'm annoyed i let it happen.
