It's not surprising then when people obsessively praise something and browbeat people who haven't played it that it's going to alienate people and make the fandom look bad. I'm not disagreeing that it's alienating, I'm just saying it's hilariously weak to avoid a really good game because of it. I often forget that lots of people play games because of the social aspect more than the quality of the experience itself, and so the fandom IS the game to them.
