Explanation on reddit, and it seems this decision had less to do with Mass Effect itself and more with the potential slippery slope precedent Retake Mass Effect has set up to pull the same stunt for non-video-game issues:

"Hi everyone!

I wanted to hop in and give a little bit of first-hand insight into what has happened, and what is going through our minds regarding this fundraiser. First and foremost, I want to express our absolute appreciation to everyone who supports us - whether it is through Retake Mass Effect or directly, we greatly appreciate your support.

The Retake Mass Effect fundraiser has been unprecedented in a few ways for us, and we've been discussing the whole thing extensively as an organization. For the past week or so, we've received quite a bit of email regarding the fundraiser. It ranged from those wanting to verify the legitimacy of the fundraiser (something we're always happy to discuss!), accusing us of capitalizing on the emotions of fans, appreciation for allowing the group to unite under a positive cause- it ran the gamut in terms of sentiments. While we did receive some negative mail regarding the drive, I can assure you our decision was not about bowing to pressure from anyone- corporate, individual, or otherwise. The real concern on our end was the slippery slope that attaching causes to fundraising for Child's Play can create. While RME had the best of intentions and was overwhelmingly generous, it shed light on an issue that we needed to address.

For example, if someone took a hotly debated political issue and said "Donate to Child's Play to support [insert issue here]", it could cause some very serious problems for us. Clearly what Retake Mass Effect is doing is in no way negative- like I said, it pointed out a dangerous precedent for others to use the charity for agendas we clearly do not support. We're taking a step back and looking at our policies to see what we can do to still appreciate and support the community while avoiding implications of Child's Play being attached to other causes.

We care deeply about the game community, and work very hard to connect and collaborate with those who support us."

If the ME3 idiots actually cared about the children, they can easily donate to a DIFFERENT childrens charity.

That's what they're trying to do:
